Supernova

Seoul- and New York City-based jazz guitarist Paul JB Lee’s debut album, Supernova, was deeply inspired by his quest to understand the purpose of existence within the vast and magnificent observable universe. The spark of curiosity ignited while gazing at the breathtaking New York City night sky, contemplating how humanity has managed to reach the surface of the moon.

As he reflected on the immensity of the cosmos, he came to a profound realization—human existence is insignificant in the grand scheme of the universe. Yet, rather than despair, this understanding brought him a sense of liberation. If human beings are insignificant, then so too are the hardships, agonies, and sufferings they endure. And because of this insignificance, there is no room or time for hate, jealousy, self-aggrandizement, or narcissism. These realizations became the core inspiration behind the album, driving him to express these thoughts in the way he knows best—through musical notes, harmonies, and rhythms.

The album was recorded in early summer 2018 in New York City. Although it took seven years to finally see the light of day, Supernova is set to be released on February 21, 2025. Paul JB Lee hopes that these compositions will resonate with listeners and inspire the same curiosity that once ignited his own.

Especially, the last bonus track—a rendition of Charlie Parker’s jazz standard Ah Leu Cha—will be available exclusively on the physical copy of the album.

서울과 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하는 재즈 기타리스트 Paul JB Lee: 이주봉 의 첫 정규앨범 Supernova는 광대하고 장엄한 관측 가능한 우주 속에서 존재의 의미를 탐구하는 과정에서 깊은 영감을 받았다. 어느날 뉴욕의 아름다운 밤하늘을 바라보며, 인류가 어떻게 달 표면에 도달했는지에 대한 궁금증이 떠오른 것이 이 앨범의 시작이었다.

그는 거대한 우주의 무대에서 인간의 존재가 미미하다는 사실을 깨달았지만, 그와 동시에 뜻밖의 해방감을 느꼈다고 한다. 우리가 미미한 존재라면, 삶에서 마주하는 고통과 괴로움 또한 사소한 것이 아닐까. 그리고 인간이 본질적으로 미미한 존재이기에 증오, 질투, 자기 과시, 나르시시즘 등에 사로잡힐 이유도, 그럴 시간도 없다는 생각이 들었다. 이러한 깨달음들은 그의 음악적 영감의 핵심이 되었으며, 그는 이를 가장 잘 표현할 수 있는 방식—음악적 선율과 하모니, 그리고 리듬을 통해 전달하고자 했다.

이 앨범은 2018년 초여름, 뉴욕에서 녹음되었다. 세상에 나오기까지 7년이라는 시간이 걸렸지만, 드디어 2025년 2월 21일에 발표될 예정이다. Paul JB Lee 는 이 곡들이 많은 이들의 마음에 울림을 주고, 그가 느꼈던 호기심과 영감을 다시금 불러일으킬 수 있기를 바라고 있다.

특히, 보너스 트랙으로 수록된 찰리 파커(Charlie Parker)의 재즈 스탠더드 Ah Leu Cha의 편곡 버전은 앨범의 실물 CD에서만 독점적으로 만나볼 수 있다.

[About Artist]

Paul JB Lee is a New York City and Seoul based guitarist, composer, and educator. Born in South Korea in 1993, he moved to Houston, TX, in 2004, where he began performing at age 14.

In 2011, Paul moved to New York City to attend The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, where he earned a BFA in Jazz Performance (2015), studying with world-renowned musicians such as Adam Rogers, Peter Bernstein, and Jonathan Kreisberg. He later pursued a Master of Music (2018) at NYU Steinhardt, where he studied intensively under Adam Rogers and served as an adjunct professor for three semesters.

Paul has shared the stage and recorded with jazz luminaries like Dave Holland, Alan Ferber, Randy Brecker, Alex Sipiagin, and Dave Glasser. In 2017, he was a semi-finalist at the Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition. He performed regularly at top NYC venues, including Blue Note, 55 Bar, Bar Next Door, and Minton's Playhouse. As a sideman, he contributed to SuKyung Kim’s "Lilac Hill" (2020), which was nominated for Best Jazz Album at the Korean Music Awards in 2021.

In 2020 Paul has returned and resumed his career in his home country of South Korea, preparing to release his debut album, recorded in 2018 with Lex Korten, Nathan Bellott, Daniel Durst, and Mark Ferber, set for release in February 2025.

Currently, Paul is performing and recording across Seoul and South Korea, while planning his return to the NYC jazz scene.

Paul JB Lee는 뉴욕과 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 기타리스트, 작곡가, 그리고 교육자이다. 1993년 한국에서 태어나 2004년 미국 텍사스 휴스턴으로 이주했으며, 14세부터 연주하며 경력을 쌓기 시작했다.

2011년, 뉴욕으로 이동해 The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music에서 재즈 퍼포먼스 학사(BFA, 2015)를 취득하며 Adam Rogers, Peter Bernstein, Jonathan Kreisberg 등 세계적인 뮤지션들에게 사사했다. 이후 뉴욕대학교(NYU) Steinhardt에서 음악 석사(Master of Music, 2018)를 취득하며 Adam Rogers의 집중 지도 아래 학업을 이어갔고, 3학기 동안 NYU에서 강사(adjunct professor)로 활동했다.

그는 Dave Holland, Alan Ferber, Randy Brecker, Alex Sipiagin, Dave Glasser 등 저명한 재즈 뮤지션들과 협연 및 녹음을 진행했으며, 2017년 몽트뢰 재즈 기타 콩쿠르(Montreux Jazz Guitar Competition) 준결승에 진출했다. 뉴욕에서는 Blue Note, 55 Bar, Bar Next Door, Minton’s Playhouse 등 여러 주요 공연장에서 활동했으며, 2020년 발매된 SuKyung Kim의 "Lilac Hill" 앨범에서 기타리스트로 참여해, 해당 앨범이 2021년 한국대중음악상 재즈 부문 후보로 선정되었다.

2020년부터 고국인 대한민국에 귀국해 활동을 이어나갔다. 뉴욕에서 2018년 녹음한 데뷔 앨범을 마침내 2025년 2월 발매할 준비를 마쳤으며, 해당 앨범에는 Lex Korten, Nathan Bellott, Daniel Durst, Mark Ferber 등이 참여했다.

현재 그는 서울 및 대한민국 전역에서 공연과 녹음 활동을 활발히 펼치고 있으며, 뉴욕 재즈 신(Scene)으로의 복귀를 준비하고 있다.
